SPEEDSTER'S HISTORY
In 1989 Porsche reintroduce into the range one of the most iconic models
for its style and elegance, the Speedster. This name was created from the
combination of two words (speed and roadster), which are very important to the
automobile world, and it appeared for the first time on a car marked by the
effigy of the Cavallina of Stuttgart in 1959, when the 356 was passing the
baton to the legendary 911. This was a real marketing operation aimed at
expanding the Porsche market, offering an "open-air" sportscar at a
lower cost than the Cabriolet version. Essentiality was at the basis of
Speedster’s philosophy, and the distinctive feature of this variant was the
lower, profiled windshield.
Almost 30 years after the debut of the parent, Porsche uses the chassis
and mechanics of the 911 Cabriolet as a basis to revive the myth of lightweight
and powerful sports, putting into production - from January 1989 - the 3.2
Speedster. Introduced shortly before the introduction of the new 964 model, the
Speedster has a very low and penetrating line, characterised by the reduced
windshield and the "dual hump tonneau cover", which covers the manual hood once
placed in its housing. Its charm has contributed to the great success of this
model, which was produced in 2,065 pieces, of which only 823 were destined to
the American market.
